Indigenous cultural arts courses in Hobart, Tasmania, are available at the Clarence Campus of the Tasmanian Polytechnic.
Aboriginal students undertaking the Certificate IV in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts and the Diploma of Art Craft Design at the Tasmanian Polytechnic Clarence Campus, have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of their own history, heritage and culture.
Delivered by a Tasmanian Aboriginal teacher, the core units are taught using both an academic and holistic approach. Techniques and designs include the production of works that reflect their own Tasmanian or Torres Strait Islander culture.
Conchology, shell work, bark art, basket making, twining, drawing, painting and collage are some of the studies/activities enjoyed by students.
The course includes visits from Aboriginal community members, Aboriginal organisations and Tasmanian Aboriginal Elders.
The course emphasises a unique culture, alive and striving, and encourages and builds a pathway for our younger generations to follow.
